Se déplacant sur les blocs sans toucher le sol, l'artiste empile méthodiquement les blocs sous lui-même, construisant une colonne précaire. Tels Beckett et Bruce Nauman avant lui, Cattelain met le corps au service d'ambitions futiles ou d'entreprises absurdes. Claude Cattelain's actions and performances involve common building materials, such as scrap lumber and cinder blocks, in the execution of basic tasks that nonetheless demand feats of endurance acrobatic skill. In Colonne Empirique en Ligne, a long line of cinder blocks extends across the exhibition space. Moving along the blocks without touching the floor, the artist methodically stacks the blocks beneath himself, constructing a precarious column. Like Beckett and Bruce Nauman before him, Cattelain puts the body in the service of futile ambitions or absurd undertakings. But thes undertakinfs heed formal principles, achieved through and in spite of the physical, unpredictable labor it takes to build them. The minimalist structures that haunt his actions appear through a mesh of effort, suspense and pathos - byproducts of the protocol, rich enough to redeem its very failure.
